Therefore là một liên từ có nghĩa là "do đó", "vì thế", "bởi vậy", "vậy nên",  được sử dụng để tăng sự kết nối giữa các vế trong câu hay hai câu văn với nhau.

Ví dụ: 

• She studied hard for the test; therefore, she earned a high score. (Cô ấy đã học hành chăm chỉ cho bài kiểm tra; do đó, cô ấy đạt được điểm cao.)

• The weather forecast predicted heavy rain; therefore, they decided to cancel the outdoor event. (Dự báo thời tiết dự đoán mưa lớn; vì vậy, họ quyết định hủy sự kiện ngoài trời.)

Cấu trúc: Mệnh đề; therefore, mệnh đề

Cách dùng: Ngăn cách với mệnh đề trước bằng dấu chấm phẩy, ngăn cách với mệnh đề sau bằng dấu phẩy.

Ví dụ:

- The weather is bad; therefore, we should postpone the picnic. (Thời tiết xấu, vì vậy chúng ta nên hoãn buổi dã ngoại.)

- She forgot to set her alarm; therefore, she overslept and missed her morning meeting. (Cô ấy quên đặt báo thức, vì vậy cô ấy ngủ quên và bỏ lỡ cuộc họp buổi sáng.)

2.2. Therefore đứng sau từ "and"

Cấu trúc: Mệnh đề + and + therefore + Mệnh đề

Cách dùng: Dùng để nối hai mệnh đề có liên quan về mặt logic.

Ví dụ:

• We finished our work early, and therefore we decided to go out for dinner. (Chúng tôi hoàn thành công việc sớm, và vì vậy chúng tôi quyết định đi ăn tối ra ngoài.)
• She completed her assignment on time, and therefore she earned praise from her teacher. (Cô ấy hoàn thành bài tập đúng hạn, và vì vậy cô ấy nhận được sự khen ngợi từ giáo viên.)
• He saved enough money, and therefore he could afford to buy a new car. (Anh ấy đã tiết kiệm đủ tiền, và vì vậy anh ấy có đủ khả năng mua một chiếc xe mới.)

2.3. Therefore đứng đầu câu

• He stayed up late to finish his homework. Therefore, he felt very tired the next morning. (Cậu ấy đã thức khuya để hoàn thành bài tập. Vì vậy, cậu ấy cảm thấy rất mệt mỏi vào sáng hôm sau.)

2.4. Therefore đứng cuối câu

Cấu trúc: (Mệnh đề) Mệnh đề + therefore.

Cách dùng: Đứng sau mệnh đề và trước dấu chấm.

Ví dụ:

• The company is facing financial difficulties. Many employees have been laid off, therefore. (Công ty đang gặp khó khăn về tài chính. Do đó, nhiều nhân viên đã bị sa thải.)

• She didn't study hard for the exam. She failed, therefore. (Cô ấy không học tập chăm chỉ cho kỳ thi. Do đó, cô ấy đã trượt.)

• It is important to stay positive and never give up. We can achieve anything we set our minds to, therefore. (Điều quan trọng là phải giữ tinh thần lạc quan và không bao giờ bỏ cuộc. Do đó, chúng ta có thể đạt được bất cứ điều gì chúng ta đặt ra trong tâm trí.)

3.1. Therefore dùng để chỉ quan hệ nhân quả

Cách dùng cấu trúc therefore này để chỉ ra mối liên hệ nguyên nhân – kết quả giữa hai mệnh đề. Trong cấu trúc này, mệnh đề sau "therefore" thường là kết quả trực tiếp hoặc hậu quả logic của mệnh đề trước đó.

Ví dụ:

- She missed her train; therefore, she arrived late to the meeting. (Cô ấy đã lỡ chuyến tàu; do đó, cô ấy đến muộn cuộc họp.)

=> Trong ví dụ này, "therefore" được sử dụng để liên kết việc cô ấy lỡ chuyến tàu với việc cô ấy đến muộn cuộc họp

- He forgot his umbrella; therefore, he got soaked in the rain. (Anh ấy quên mang theo cái ô; do đó, anh ấy bị ướt đẫm trong cơn mưa.)

=> Trong ví dụ này, "therefore" liên kết việc anh ấy quên mang theo cái ô với việc anh ấy bị ướt đẫm trong cơn mưa, chỉ ra mối quan hệ nhân quả giữa hai sự kiện.

3.2. Therefore dùng để đưa ra suy luận

Bên cạnh đó, Therefore cũng được sử dụng để đưa ra một suy luận dựa trên quan sát của người nói. Khi đó, therefore thường không biểu diễn một mối quan hệ nguyên nhân - kết quả chắc chắn, mà chỉ là một suy luận dựa trên thông tin đã được cung cấp.

Lưu ý: Cấu trúc này thường được sử dụng trong câu điều kiện loại 2 để biểu thị điều người nói là suy luận chứ không phải sự thật.

Ví dụ:

• The traffic is heavy, and the roads are congested; therefore, there must be an accident ahead. (Giao thông đông đúc, và đường phố tắc nghẽn; do đó, có lẽ có một vụ tai nạn phía trước.)

• Sarah always brings her camera when she goes out; therefore, she must be interested in photography. (Sarah luôn mang theo máy ảnh khi ra ngoài; do đó, có lẽ cô ấy quan tâm đến nhiếp ảnh.)

3.3. Cách dùng therefore như trạng từ

Therefore cũng có thể được sử dụng như một trạng từ để chỉ một cách rõ ràng hoặc dứt khoát rằng điều gì đó là hợp lý hoặc chắc chắn.

Ví dụ:

• You failed to prepare for the exam; therefore, you didn't pass. (Bạn đã không chuẩn bị cho kỳ thi; do đó, bạn không đậu.)
• We worked hard; therefore, we deserve a break. (Chúng ta đã làm việc chăm chỉ; do đó, chúng ta xứng đáng được nghỉ ngơi.)

4. Các từ - cụm từ đồng nghĩa với Therefore thường gặp

Một số từ - cụm từ có thể sử dụng để thay thế Therefore là: 

• Accordingly: Theo đó, phù hợp với điều đó

Ví dụ: Accordingly, we need to adjust our plans. (Theo đó, chúng ta cần điều chỉnh kế hoạch của mình.)

• Due to this fact: Do thực tế này, vì thực tế này

Ví dụ: Due to this fact, we must take action immediately. (Do thực tế này, chúng ta phải hành động ngay lập tức.)

• Thus: Như vậy, do đó

Ví dụ: She was very tired, thus she went to bed early. (Cô ấy rất mệt, do đó cô ấy đi ngủ sớm.)

• Hence: Do đó, từ đó

Ví dụ: He is very intelligent, hence he is successful. (Anh ấy rất thông minh, do đó anh ấy thành công.)

• Consequently: Hệ quả là, do đó

Ví dụ: He missed the train, consequently he was late for work. (Anh ấy lỡ chuyến tàu, hệ quả là anh ấy đi làm trễ.)

• For that reason: Vì lý do đó, do đó

Ví dụ: For that reason, I decided not to go to the party. (Vì lý do đó, tôi quyết định không đi dự tiệc.)

• Wherefore: Vì vậy, do đó (mang tính trang trọng)

Ví dụ: Wherefore art thou Romeo? (Vì vậy, Romeo, ngươi là ai?)

• Ergo: Do đó, vì vậy (mang tính logic)

Ví dụ: The evidence is clear, ergo he is guilty. (Bằng chứng rõ ràng, do đó anh ta có tội.)

• Then: Sau đó, do đó (thường dùng trong văn viết)

Ví dụ: He spoke to the crowd, then he left. (Anh ấy nói chuyện với đám đông, sau đó anh ấy rời đi.)

• So: Do đó, vì vậy (thường dùng trong văn nói)

Ví dụ: I am busy today, so I can't help you. (Hôm nay tôi bận, do đó tôi không thể giúp bạn.)

• As a result: Hệ quả là, do đó

Ví dụ: The company lost a lot of money, as a result they had to lay off employees. (Công ty mất nhiều tiền, hệ quả là họ phải sa thải nhân viên.)

• That being so: Do đó, vì vậy (mang tính trang trọng)

Ví dụ: That being so, we need to find a solution. (Do đó, chúng ta cần tìm một giải pháp.)

• That being the case: Do đó, vì vậy (mang tính trang trọng)

Ví dụ: That being the case, I will not be able to attend the meeting. (Do đó, tôi sẽ không thể tham dự cuộc họp.)

• That’s why: Đó là lý do tại sao

Ví dụ: I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry. That's why I kept it a secret. (Tôi không nói với bạn vì tôi không muốn bạn lo lắng. Đó là lý do tại sao tôi giữ bí mật.)

5. Lưu ý khi dùng Therefore

Một số lưu ý các bạn cần ghi nhớ khi sử dụng therefore trong tiếng Anh là: 

• Hạn chế sử dụng Therefore trong văn nói:

Therefore là một từ mang tính trang trọng, thích hợp cho văn viết hơn là văn nói. Trong giao tiếp hàng ngày, nên ưu tiên sử dụng các từ nối thông dụng như "so" hoặc "then".

Ví dụ:

Văn viết: Therefore, the government has decided to implement new policies to address the issue of climate change.

Văn nói: So, the government is going to do something about climate change.

• Quy tắc sử dụng dấu trước và sau "Therefore":

• Tránh sử dụng "Therefore" để nối hai câu mà không có mối quan hệ nhân quả rõ ràng.

Ví dụ:

Đúng: I studied hard for the exam; therefore, I got a good grade.

Sai: I studied hard for the exam therefore I got a good grade. (Sai vì không có mối quan hệ nhân quả)

• Therefore không thể thay thế cho các từ nối khác như "because" hoặc "since".

• Khi "Therefore" đứng ở đầu câu, nó cần được ngăn cách với mệnh đề phía sau bằng dấu phẩy để tránh gây nhầm lẫn và làm cho câu trở nên rõ ràng hơn.
