I’m going to tell you about my college graduation gift from my grandparents. They have four grandchildren, so they made a pact to give us all the same graduation gift. With this said, they decided to gift all of us $2,000 upon completion of our Bachelor’s Degree. I graduated back in May 2015 and received the gift about a month after, since they live 12 hours away.
I had a late graduation party in my backyard in June since some family members were busy during the month of May with their own children. My grandparents suffered through a 12-hour car ride to make it to my special day - I was so very grateful! So, they slipped me a card while I was opening my other cards and gifts, and I could not believe my eyes! I had heard that he gave all of us a generous gift, but I didn’t expect the gravity of just how much. When Monday came, I immediately deposited it into my savings account, as I’m quite a frugal person. However, months later, I decided to treat myself to a solo trip to Prague. Considering I had always dreamt of going to Prague, I felt that I used my money well. Since I had never received a gift quite like this, I felt extremely excited. I thought that this money gave me new opportunities to travel and enjoy my future, especially if I save it. Moreover, apart from the money, I felt very appreciative that my grandparents traveled all that way for me.

Well, giving and receiving money is quite common in Indian culture. There are many occasions when I get money as a present. Today, I would like to talk about a time when I received money as a gift. I vividly remember that last year it was my 18th birthday. My parents organized a grand night party at home and invited my kith and kin. On that special day, I dressed up in a formal suit. Moreover, my house was decorated with lights and balloons because I love the decoration of lights. Actually, my maternal uncle lives in Canada and luckily he came to India last year and attended my birthday party. On that day, I received many gifts from my near and dear ones.
My maternal uncle gave me 200 Canadian dollars as a present. Firstly, I refused to get that money but he told me that this was a token of love. Honestly speaking, I was on top of the world after receiving Canadian dollars as a gift despite having numerous other gifts. I used that money to buy a new laptop. Because my exams were around the corner. So, I had to make presentations. To be honest, that money proved quite fruitful for me.

A gift always brings a smile to our face, whenever we receive it. Moreover, it shows our importance in others' lives. Different types of gifts are given on different occasions, as a token of blessings and love. I have also received many gifts so far on various occasions. On my last birthday, I received money as a gift from my elder brother.
Since he was confused about my preference for a gift, he decided to give me some money as a gift so that I could buy anything of my choice. He made my birthday special when he had given me an envelope containing some cash. There was an exact amount of cash inside which I required to purchase an Apple Watch. I felt so overwhelmed that tears started rolling down my eyes. Next day, my brother and I went to the market and bought a white Apple Watch for me. Out of excitement, I clicked a picture of that watch and posted it on my social site to share my happiness with my friends and relatives.
I was really grateful to my brother for the gesture of love and care he had shown me. I really love him for his unconditional love and support. He understands my needs even if I do not tell him. That gift was indeed special for me but the person who gave me that gift is the most special one.

3. Do you think it is more important to save or to spend money? Why?
Saving or spending, that’s always a tricky question! I think it’s all about finding the right balance. Saving money is important for future needs and emergencies. It gives us a safety net and financial stability. But hey, we shouldn’t forget to enjoy life too! Spending money on experiences, creating memories, and treating ourselves every now and then can bring joy and fulfillment. So, my vote goes to a healthy mix of both saving and spending wisely.
4. What are some ways people waste their money?
Ah, the ways we waste our hard-earned money! We’re all guilty of it at some point. Some common culprits include impulsive shopping sprees, unnecessary subscriptions, dining out excessively, and falling for those irresistible sales and deals. It’s important to be mindful of our spending habits and make wise choices to avoid wasting our money on things that don’t truly add value to our lives.
5. How do you think people’s attitudes towards money have changed over the years?
Over the years, people’s attitudes towards money have definitely evolved. With advancements in technology, the rise of the economy, and increased access to information, financial literacy and awareness have improved. People are becoming more conscious about saving, investing, and planning for the future. Additionally, there’s a growing emphasis on experiences and personal fulfillment rather than solely focusing on material wealth. It’s a positive shift that encourages a healthier relationship with money.
