Phần thi IELTS Writing Task 1 là kéo dài khoảng 20 phút, yêu cầu thí sinh phân tích, mô tả thông tin trên biểu đồ, đồ thị, bảng biểu, sơ đồ hoặc bản đồ,...
Task 1 chiếm ⅓ tổng số điểm của bài thi IELTS Writing nhằm đánh giá khả năng sắp xếp ý logic, sử dụng từ vựng, cấu trúc ngữ pháp của thí sinh, đồng thời kiểm tra kỹ năng giải thích và trình bày thông tin hiệu quả.

IELTS Writing Task 2 kéo dài trong khoảng 40 phút và chiếm ⅔ số điểm của bài thi Writing. Bài thi yêu cầu thí sinh đưa ra quan điểm cá nhân hoặc thảo luận về các vấn đề xã hội, kinh tế, văn hóa, giáo dục,... qua đó kiểm tra khả năng đưa ra ý kiến, lập luận và phát triển ý tưởng.
Do đó, thí sinh cần phải luyện tập viết bài luận về các chủ đề khác nhau để làm quen với các cấu trúc và từ vựng phù hợp, cũng như nâng cao khả năng viết của mình.
