Phân biệt hai cặp lượng từ dễ nhầm lẫn Few, A few, Little, A little

Trong tiếng Anh, các cặp lượng từ như Few, A few, Little, A little rất dễ gây nhầm lẫn cho người học. Vậy chúng có sự khác biệt như thế nào? Nên sử dụng các từ này ra sao cho đúng?

1. Cách dùng Little

Little thường đứng trước các danh từ không đếm được và mang nghĩa phủ định là rất ít, không đủ để làm gì.

Ví dụ:

• There is little hope of finding the lost key. (Gần như không có hy vọng tìm thấy chìa khóa bị mất.)

• Little is known about the architect’s early life. (Người ta biết rất ít về cuộc đời ngày trước của vị kiến trúc sư.)

• Andy is very busy with her job. She has little time for other things. (Andy rất bận rộn với công việc của mình. Cô ấy có rất ít thời gian cho những thứ khác.)

• I’m not satisfied with it but I suppose I have little choice. (Tôi không hài lòng với nó nhưng tôi cho rằng tôi hầu như không có sự lựa chọn.)

Một số Collocations và Idioms với Little:

• Very little: Rất ít, cực kỳ ít

Ví dụ: There's very little hope of finding survivors now. (Giờ đây có rất ít hy vọng tìm thấy người sống sót.)

• Too little: Quá ít (không đủ)

Ví dụ: The company invested too little money in research and development. (Công ty đầu tư quá ít tiền vào nghiên cứu và phát triển.)

• Little by little: Dần dần, từng chút một

Ví dụ: Little by little, he regained his strength after the illness. (Dần dần, anh ấy lấy lại sức sau bệnh.)

• To have little choice: Có rất ít hoặc hầu như không có sự lựa chọn nào khác

Ví dụ: I didn't want to agree, but I had little choice. (Tôi không muốn đồng ý, nhưng tôi không còn nhiều lựa chọn.)

• To have little to do with something: Hầu như không liên quan gì đến điều gì đó

Ví dụ: Her decision had little to do with what he said. (Quyết định của cô ấy hầu như không liên quan gì đến những gì anh ấy nói.)

2. Cách dùng A little

A little thường đứng trước các danh từ không đếm được mang nghĩa là một chút, một ít.

Ví dụ;

• Let’s go and get some coffee. We still have a little time before the bus arrives. (Hãy đi uống chút cà phê nào. Chúng ta còn một chút thời gian trước khi xe buýt đến.)

• Peter said nothing, but he drank a bottle of milk and ate a little bread. (Peter chẳng nói gì cả, nhưng anh ấy uống một chai sữa và ăn một chút bánh mì.)

• ‘Has my explanation helped’ ‘A little, yes.’ (‘Lời giải thích của tôi giúp ích cho bạn chứ?’ ‘Ừ, một chút.’)

• Paul hasn’t been looking well recently, and my father a little worried about him. (Paul trông không khỏe lắm gần đây, và cha tôi có chút lo lắng về anh ấy.)

• Just a little: Chỉ một chút

A little và little đều biểu thị số lượng nhỏ, ít và đều đứng trước danh từ không đếm được nhưng lại khác nhau về ý nghĩa biểu đạt.

4. Cách dùng Few

Lượng từ Few được sử dụng trước danh từ đếm được với nghĩa là có rất ít, không nhiều.

Ví dụ:

• Lily called her few friends together and told them she was leaving. (Lily gọi các bạn của cô ấy lại và nói với họ là cô ấy sắp rời đi.)

• Andrea doesn’t like living in New York. He has few friends here. (Andrea không thích sống ở New York. Anh ấy có rất ít bạn bè ở đây.)

• Few cities in Asia can match the cultural diversity of Tokyo. (Rất ít thành phố nào ở Châu Á có thể sánh được với sự đa dạng văn hóa của Tokyo.)

• Few people will forget the emotional scene as John Lennon gave his farewell performance. (Ít ai có thể quên được cảnh tượng xúc động khi John Lennon thực hiện màn biểu diễn chia tay.)

• Very few: Rất ít, cực kỳ ít

Ví dụ: Very few people understand quantum physics. (Rất ít người hiểu vật lý lượng tử.)

• Too few: Quá ít (không đủ)

Ví dụ: The team has too few players to compete effectively. (Đội có quá ít cầu thủ để cạnh tranh hiệu quả.)

• Quite a few (cách dùng đặc biệt): Khá nhiều, một số lượng đáng kể (mặc dù vẫn có "few", nhưng cách dùng này lại mang ý nghĩa tích cực, đối lập với "few" thông thường).

Ví dụ: Quite a few students applied for the scholarship. (Khá nhiều sinh viên đã nộp đơn xin học bổng.)

• Few and far between: Hiếm có, không thường xuyên, số lượng ít ỏi

Ví dụ: Job opportunities like this are few and far between. (Cơ hội việc làm như thế này rất hiếm có.)

• (A man/woman of) few words: Người ít nói, kiệm lời

5. Cách dùng A Few

Lượng từ A few được sử dụng trước danh từ đếm được với nghĩa là một chút, một ít đủ xài.

Ví dụ:

• The password is known by only a few people. (Chỉ một vài người biết mật khẩu.)

• Don’t take all the candies. Just have a few. (Đừng lấy hết kẹo. Chỉ lấy vài cái thôi.)

• I won’t be long. I’ve only got a few things to do. (Tôi sẽ không đi lâu đâu. Tôi chỉ có một vài việc để làm thôi.)
